Top Tennis Clubs in Lisbon, Sintra, and Cascais

Game, Set, Match! Our Short List of Top Tennis Clubs in Lisbon, Sintra, and Cascais

Tennis in Portugal is growing in popularity, not just among travellers on tennis holidays but locals as well.

There are over 350 tennis clubs in Portugal, and many coastal hotels and resorts have tennis facilities too, particularly in the more temperate southern swathe of the country.

When it comes to enjoying the thrilling game of tennis in scenic landscapes or vibrant urban settings, Lisbon and its surrounding area offer a range of top-notch facilities.

Tennis clubs in Portugal tend to be smaller than others in Southern Europe, with a lesser number of courts. For this reason, we suggest booking well in advance or contacting Iberian Escapes Concierge experts to do that for you. We can also arrange private coaches, tennis holidays and tennis lessons for the entire family in beautiful Portugal.

Estoril Tennis Club

Founded over 70 years ago, the Estoril Tennis Club is credited with boosting the game’s popularity in Portugal and putting the county on the international tennis map. The club is one of the best equipped in Portugal, with 14 interior and exterior clay courts, grass courts, and a central court used for international tournaments. After a match, you can unwind in a luxurious pool or spa, or head to the gym. One of the curiosities of the Estoril Tennis Club is that it also hosts Bridge meet-ups and tournaments in the club rooms, a local custom that’s worth popping in to take a peek!

Lisboa Racket Centre

A hugely popular club for all ages, the Lisboa Racket Centre offers great facilities close to the city centre but far enough to feel surrounded by nature and fresh air. Catering to nearly every type of racket game, from tennis to pickleball and padel (a dynamic sport played on an enclosed court), this is the best place for a quick and sweaty match while you are on holiday in Lisbon. After your workout, there is a small pool to cool off in and an excellent restaurant to refuel. Lisboa Racket Centre caters to all levels and is a great place to take the family for a day out hitting balls around.

Valténis Country Club, Sintra

Situated inside the prestigious Penha Longa Resort, the Valténis Country Club offers superb facilities nestled in the rolling hills and lush forests of magical Sintra. Its eight courts are a pleasure to play on, and the club boasts facilities for padel too along with a gorgeous outdoor leisure area with an Olympic-sized pool for laps and wading pools for the little ones. Staff are friendly and tariffs are surprisingly reasonable for the level of luxury found here. The club is also renowned for its tennis academies for all ages. If you are looking to up your game while on holiday, the club’s pro clinics are led by excellent international coaches.

Quinta da Marinha Racket Club, Cascais

Superbly situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the Sintra National Park, this outstanding club is not only one of Portugal’s largest but also the most well-equipped and exclusive. Facilities include courts for tennis (9 courts), padel (9 courts) and squash (3 courts), along with a luxurious spa and wellness centre and heated swimming pool. Given the club’s luxe trimmings, prices here can be a little higher than other clubs, particularly for gear rental. Try and bring your own, or head to Decathlon in Lisbon for a wide selection of gear for all sports at very reasonable prices.

Clube de Ténis do Jamor, Lisbon

Situated inside a natural park and near the National Tennis Stadium, this tennis club is a much-loved destination by locals and indeed the entire family. Pack your rackets and a picnic lunch and head to one of its 32 clay courts for a fabulous day out. The club is a 30-minute drive from central Lisbon with parking available, and within a short walk of the Cruz Quebrada train station, making the Clube de Ténis do Jamor an accessible option for a game of tennis during your holiday in Portugal.

Clube de Ténis de Monsanto, Lisbon

Also inside a natural park, the Clube de Ténis de Monsanto is a no-frills option within easy reach of the city centre. The 6 clay courts are fairly well maintained but get busy on the weekends, so book ahead and re-confirm your booking before you set off. There is a coffee shop on-site for the basics, but you might also like to pack a picnic lunch and head off into the bushlands of Monsanto Park, which is Lisbon’s largest.

Padel Campo Grande, Lisbon

If you can play tennis you can play padel! Padel is hugely popular all over Spain and Portugal and offers a less serious and more social way to hit balls around a court.

Slightly similar to squash and very fast-moving, padel is played within an enclosed netted court, so you get plenty of chances to smack a volley with all those ricocheting balls. Padel is less competitive than tennis, and you will often see groups of friends heading to padel courts post-work or on the weekends.

The Padel Campo Grande offers 9 outdoor courts in a downtown location, right in the middle of the Jardim do Campo park. Gear hire is available onsite, along with a relaxing bar-cafe to unwind in after your game.

As you can see, whether you choose Lisbon, Sintra, or Cascais, the tennis scene in Portugal caters to all levels and budgets. From historic clubs with a rich tradition to urban courts for social matches, you’ll find one that hits your groove.
